In Grenoble (France), the Y.SPOT open lab includes the Y.SPOT Lab (an entity of the French research technology organization CEA) and the project labeled Y.SPOT Partners, which hosts several entities: Village by CA, the coordination team running the GIANT Partnership, several teams working for CEA, and the Atelier Arts-Sciences.
This open lab demonstrates an original value proposition. It handles the multiple paradoxes of open or collaborative innovation. This White Book identifies the specificities and the dynamics of the Y.SPOT Lab to face the challenges of deeptech innovation in a context where societal and environmental issues attract increased attention and have the same importance as economic value.
This White Book proposes an analysis of the key properties and organizational principles for an open lab operating in the deeptech domain: How can it have a positive impact on the technological innovation trajectories that pervade our societies?
This White Book elaborates on more than 10 years of expertise in the management of open labs and open innovation. Based on more than 50 interviews and comparisons with open labs addressing deeptech-related challenges in France, Germany, and Canada, it identifies key success factors for internal organizational drivers and dynamics of ecosystems.

Cet open lab propose une promesse de valeur originale. Il gère les multiples paradoxes de l’innovation ouverte et de l’innovation collaborative. Ce livre blanc identifie les dynamiques spécifiques de l’open lab Y.SPOT pour relever les défis du developpement de la deeptech dans un contexte où les enjeux sociétaux et environnementaux sont devenus majeurs et revêtent la même importance que la création de valeur économique.
Ce livre blanc propose une grille d’analyse qui permet de comprendre les propriétés clés et principes d’organisation d’un open lab actif dans la deeptech: comment s’organiser pour avoir un impact positif sur les trajectoires d’innovation technologique qui traversent nos sociétés ?
Réalisé par la chaire newPIC de Paris School of business, ce livre blanc s’appuie sur une dizaine d’années d’expertise sur les open labs et le management de l’innovation ouverte. Basé sur plus de 50 entretiens et des comparaisons avec des open labs intégrant les enjeux de la deeptech en France, en Allemagne et au Canada, ce rapport met en perspective les principes d’organisation interne et les dynamiques d’écosystèmes qui doivent être installés pour permettre le succès d’un tel dispositif de l’innovation ouverte.
For this research project, we have installed a field research protocol based on semi-structured interviews and participant observation, with systematic triangulation of perspectives associated with the different categories of stakeholders active around CEA's Y.SPOT. We analyzed their respective roles and contributions, decision-making processes, and tangible and intangible resources. We investigated the ecosystems around the Y.SPOT's facilities in Grenoble, Nice and Toulouse. We had a special focus on interactions between CEA's research labs and CEA's Y.SPOT, to understand the emergence, incubation, maturation, and acceleration of entrepreneurial projects. We also developped a comparison with JOSEPHS (Nuremberg, Germany), CENTECH (Montréal, Canada), Euratechnologies (Lille, France) and thecamp (Aix en Provence, France).
